Sam Mitchell
 
Sam Mitchell began his dance training in 1990 with Helga Ishikata at the Delta Ballet Academy, in Antioch California. He continued his training at The University of California Santa Barbara in modern and ballet with Christopher Pilafian, Alice Condodina, Tonia Shimin, Nancy Colahan, Jerry Pearson, Delila Moseley and Valerie Huston. Upon moving to New York, Sam continued his studies at Steps on Broadway, Peridance, and Dancespace, performing his choreography at The Knitting Factory and The Brooklyn Armory. Back in California, he studied at ODC Dance, Shawl Anderson, Brady Street, Dancers Group and Lines Contemporary Ballet.

Sam performed as a core dancer with Santa Barbara Dance Theatre for five years, and has been featured as a guest artist with Ballet Santa Barbara, Torque Dance Theater, Shift Physical Theater, The Residents, Mobius Operandi and most recently with John Malashock Dance Theater. Sam has worked with choreographers such as Doug Elkins, Johanna Meyer, Nami Yamamoto, Sommer Ulrickson, Emily Wilson, Sarah Mclennan, Tonia Shimin, Alice Condodina, Christopher Pilafian, Steve Hunter, Tomis McDonnell, Juliana Bertelsen, and Stephanie Gilliland. He has taught ballet, modern and performing skills at the college level and in independent dance studios. Sam has performed in Santa Barbara, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, New York, Miami, the Czech Republic, China and Italy. He was also the company manager of Santa Barbara Dance Theatre in 2002, working in collaboration with company director Jerry Pearson. It is Sam’s belief that dancing is a necessity, that it establishes bonds within a community and that it tells a story of where we are from and where we are going.
